Yep, you can weld steel to stainless and you can weld stainless to steel. You can use steel or stainless welding rod in either case but the steel or steel welding rod will of course rust.

During the welding process, the filler metal type and the manner in which it is applied determines whether the resulting weld will match corrosion resistance or have the same reddish appearance, more commonly known as color match. Weathering steel specifications include ASTM A242, A588, A606, A847 ASTM A709 and AASHTO M270,

Sep 23, 2004 · The Cr is in the Corten plate but it tends to make weld metal brittle (they can heat treat the plate) in amounts above traces. I would follow the Docs instructions. 0.5Ni + 0.5Cu or the 2.5 Ni. Most major manufacturers do both. I doubt if you will detect cracks in either, providing you follow good practice.

You can weld weathering steel using the same flux combinations so that the tensile strength of the deposited weld metal (welding rod or wire) is consistent with the tensile strength of the base metal (weathering steel). Typical tensile strength of based metal (weathering steel) is 68 78 KSI. We would advise only welding A606 4 or A588 together.

May 06, 2018 · And on a side issue, so as not to create a new thread, what ARC welding rod would you recommend to match in with the Corten. TBH, i have allready done a bit of googling in what Stick and filler Rod.. (i actually have to confirm exactly what weathering steel i have, as i just found out there is 3 grades) and i have a short list.

Cor Ten is a high strength low alloy steel, but if it's something that doesn't have to retain its strength properties like a storage container, you can probably just weld it with 7018. Cor Ten is a product of United States Steel, you might be able to email them at [email protected] and get some recommendations.

What is the process of Welding for Corten steel ? COR TEN can be welded both manually and mechanically, provided the general rules of welding practices are observed. A prerequisite for obtaining identical mechanical properties in the weld and in the base material is the application of suitable welding consumables and the choice of appropraite welding conditions.

Jun 24, 2014 · technically, you would need to use a special filler rod but for decorative or ornamental stuff, you could probably get away without that. General procedure for corten is to sandblast the entire thing after fabrication, so it all starts rusting from the same place otherwise, grind marks, welds, etc, show up as different colors of rust.

Detailed

Weathering steel, often referred to by the genericized trademark COR TEN steel and sometimes written without the hyphen as corten steel, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting, and form a stable rust like appearance after several years' exposure to weather. U.S. Steel holds the registered trademark on the name COR TEN. The name COR TEN refers to the two
